The Staten Island Historical Society at Historic Richmond Town has appointed long-time Curator, Sarah Clark as its first Diversity Coordinator.  Clark will spearhead the Society’s initiatives in audience expansion and community outreach as well as the implementation of its Board approved diversity, equity, access and inclusion plan.

“I’m honored to continue this 163-year-old education non-profit organization’s mission to create opportunities for the public to explore the diversity of the American experience.  Sarah volunteered her time to spearhead the institution’s DEI plan from start to implementation. With the support of Expanding Audiences and Cultural Participation Re-grant from Staten Island Arts Historic Richmond Town is now able to institutionalize this key staff position. I’m galvanized by the Board of Directors and City’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and access.” - Jessica Phillips, Executive Director & CEO of Historic Richmond Town

The Staten Island Historical Society deeply values, celebrates, and is committed to fostering diversity, equity and inclusion in all its activities. The Society believes that building an inclusive and equitable environment is an ongoing, active process that requires constant and deliberate mindfulness and attention. With its audiences, staff, board of directors, volunteers, and partners, Historic Richmond Town persistently strives to build truly accessible spaces, a culture of diversity of voice and representation, and equity for all.

“Historic Richmond Town is such a gem of New York City; I’m thrilled to have this chance to encourage the leadership and team in expanding the reach of its offerings and building more community participation. With the resources provided by Staten Island Arts, plus the support of the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs and the Staten Island Borough President’s office, I feel energized and confident we can make a difference.” Sarah Clark, Curator & Diversity Coordinator of Historic Richmond Town

Sarah has begun the task of updating programs, internal procedures and exhibits presented by and at Historic Richmond Town, that it may better encompass all of Staten Island history, community and culture. The site’s focus is to inspire 21st century people and remain both relevant and meaningful to today’s audiences. Historic Richmond Town understands that history has a role in making change happen, that knowledge is power, and that to move forward successfully it must offer enjoyable and meaningful experiences for all people.

This on-going program is made possible by an Expanding Audiences and Cultural Participation Regrant from Staten Island Arts, made possible with generous support from New York Community Trust, The Staten Island Foundation, and the Altman Foundation. Historic Richmond Town is forever grateful for their support in this effort.
