Celebrate Women's Suffrage as we honor Women's Equality Day!
Join us to celebrate Women's Equality Day at Historic Richmond Town! Women's Equality Day commemorates the anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote on August 26, 1920. More than 100 years have passed since this historic expansion of voting rights in the United States, yet the story of Suffragists and their contributions still resonate today. We will feature stories of notable women who participated in the fight for equality across New York State, and the experiences of everyday women who advocated for their rights from the home and hearth.
Program Features
Special activities and living history programs take place throughout the village to honor and highlight the decades-long struggle for women's suffrage. Learn about the politics of the Woman Suffrage Cookbook and see recipes demonstrated in the Guyon-Lake-Tysen House kitchen. Hear the voices of notable women in the movement through the years with dramatic readings by costumed interpreters. See demonstrations of women's fashions through the 19th century in the Stephens-Black House, and grapple with the 1848 Declaration of Sentiments with a handwriting activity. Kids can also make their own equality crafts. In addition to historic structures, explore the role of women in Lenape society at the Native Encampment.
