Explore the Native Encampment and learn about the Native Americans of the Northeast Woodlands.
Historic Richmond Town welcomes back Living Historian Drew Shuptar-Rayvis, who will present a special program at the Native Encampment.
Eight Coats, Seven Shirts, Fifteen Fathom Wampum: Early Colonial Settlement and the First Deeds explores the European and Algonkian peoples who traded during colonial contact in the 17th century, and later clashed as colonial settlement expanded. From Staten Island to Greater New York and New England, Shuptar-Rayvis paints a sweeping picture of the Native experience of life over 300 years ago.
Learn about the earliest American culture clashes through customs of war, adoption, captivity, alliance, friendships and marriages between Natives, Europeans and Africans. Discuss the overshadowed early colonial conflicts: the Peach War, Keift’s War, King Phillip’s War and King William’s War. A practical black powder demonstration of an 17th century firearms is featured.
With meticulously researched and reproduced costume, tools, and dozens of artifacts displayed in presentation, Drew Shuptar-Rayvis’s program is expansive, captivating, and informative.
Entry to this program is included with Open Village General Admission.
