Summer in Historic Richmond Town:
Programs & Events June-August 2022

Staten Island, New York: Summer in Historic Richmond Town continues with special programming all season long, June-August, 2022. Summer days and nights are filled to the brim at Historic Richmond Town. Experience hundreds of years of Staten Island history in the historic houses and workshops of our Open Village, celebrate Pride Month with special programming, travel through time as a historic trades apprentice, and join a three-day long schedule 4th of July festivities.

On Wednesday, May 25, Historic Richmond Town’s Main Village site comes alive with the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of New York City’s past with the opening of the annual Open Village season. From May 25-October 2 Wednesday-Sunday from 11am-5pm, visitors can watch skilled artisans as they practice their trade, tour the restored interiors of period homes, take part in civic life, and explore functioning open hearth kitchens. General admission tickets are $10 (adults), and $5 (kids 6+) 5 and under are free and include access to the Visitor Center, Open Village and the Historical Museum. Guided tours are available by advanced reservation only. Open structures vary daily. Email info@historicrichmondtown.org for more information.

Also on May 25, 7:30-9:30pm, the English Country Dance program returns to the village with a FREE, public open house. The public are encouraged to attend to learn more about the social dances popular in England in the 17th-19th centuries. Subsequent English Country Dance classes are held every second and fourth Wednesday of the month through December 28. Tickets are $10; no experience necessary and all ages are welcome.

Volunteers are needed on Saturday, May 28, 10-11am for the Phragmites Removal Project to help Historic Richmond Town staff harvest this invasive reed from the outskirts of the village campus wetlands to ensure that native plant and wildlife have the space they need to flourish and access to nutrients in the natural habitat. Volunteers can learn more and sign up on our website.

On Saturday, June 11, 12-6pm, the Uncorked! Food & Wine Festival returns with restaurants, wineries, breweries, and bakeries joining together for a local food and wine festival like no other. Ticket purchases include two drink tickets, a custom designed HRT wine glass or cup, FREE food samples from a variety of local vendors, live music, and access to living history demonstrations. Tickets are available online; $40 (21 and Over), $24 (under 21), $34 (Members), and FREE for kids 5 and under. The festival is Historic Richmond Town’s first fundraiser of the season and all proceeds go towards education, preservation, and restoration efforts that enable us to provide year-round public programming and special events.

Experience the American Revolution as it happened in Richmond County during Revolutionary War Living History Saturday on Saturday, June 18, 10am-4pm. Living Historians will be on-hand throughout the village to demonstrate military drills, weapons, and historic skills. Hear stories about soldiers and civilians, and learn about what life was like during the American Revolution in New York. Tickets are $15 per person and will be available on-site.

Celebrate our nation’s independence with old fashioned family fun during Independence Day Weekend, July 2-4, 11am-4pm. Meet costumed interpreters and living historians portraying soldiers, tradespeople, and founding fathers and mothers.  Sign your name to a copy of the Declaration of Independence. Enjoy demonstrations of 19th century fireworks, a balloon launch, and more. View a full schedule of events on our website.

Kids ages 12-15 can experience history firsthand during the Summer Apprentice Program, running weekdays, July 18-August 12, 9:30am-3:30pm. A wonderful alternative to standard summer camp, students work in historical costume alongside an experienced Artisan to build their skills in a variety of historic trades such as blacksmithing, broommaking, tinsmithing, and open hearth cooking as they make one-of-a-kind, hand crafted creations. Space is limited. Register online.
