Spring in Historic Richmond Town: Programs & Events
March-May 2022

Staten Island, New York: Winter in Historic Richmond town continues with special programming all season long, March-May, 2022. As winter fades in favor of the promise of spring, New York City’s historic village comes back to life. Step into the past as 19th century spring cleaning is in full swing in historic houses and shops. Daffodils push through the earthy green of the village landscape, and fresh blooms blossom on the trees. Take a tour through town or a hike in the woods beyond; rediscover the refuge of Historic Richmond Town.

March 1-April 30, the Visitor Center and Historical Museum are open Friday-Sunday, 12-5pm, with guided tours offered from 12-3pm. Email info@historicrichmondtown.org for more information. 

The annual Tavern Concert Series continues every Saturday through April 9 with performances at 6 and 8pm in the fully restored Guyon Tavern, located on Richmond Road. The Tavern boasts the true feel of a 19th century saloon with a wood-burning stove, flickering candles, live music, and beverage options harken back to the period. Tickets are $18. On March 19 from 1-3pm, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, Historic Richmond town hosts an Irish Soda Bread Making Workshop. Historical Interpreters explain the history and origins of this classic quick bread, and visitors make their own loaves in a Dutch Oven to take home. Tickets are $10 and include a bread tasting and a butter churning tutorial.

Historic Richmond Town welcomes local Cub Scouts to the village for Cub Scout Day on April 9 from 12-3pm. Activities include seeing historic trades people at work in shops throughout the site, hands-on activities, and a scavenger hunt in the Historical Museum. All participants must be registered in advance via the Staten Island Cub Scout Council. Scouts who participate will receive a special patch. Tickets are $12 per scout, $8 per adult. 

The Billiou-Stillwell-Perine House will be open on April 16 at 11am, 12pm, and 1pm for exclusive guided tours that reveal the oldest section of the house, built in 1662. Tickets are $5 per person and tours are approximately 45 minutes in length.

On Saturday and Sunday April 30 & May 1, and May 7 & 8 Spring Chores n’ Tours features costumed Historical Interpreters demonstrating 19th century housekeeping, cleaning, and other chores we perform today with modern conveniences. Tickets go on sale April 1.

On May 1, from 9:30am-3:30pm, The Women’s Auxiliary of the Staten Island Historical Society will hold its Annual Yankee Peddler Day in the main parking lot (441 Clarke Avenue). Admission is $3. The Market will feature dealers of antiques, collectibles, arts and crafts and newly manufactured items. All proceeds for this event benefit Historic Richmond Town. Vendors can register to participate online.

On Wednesday, May 25, Historic Richmond Town’s Main Village site comes alive with the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of New York City’s past with the opening of the annual Open Village season. From May 25-October 2 from 12-5pm, visitors can watch skilled artisans as they practice their trade, tour the restored interiors of period homes, take part in civic life, and explore functioning open hearth kitchens. General admission tickets are $10 (adults), and $5 (kids) and include access to Open Village and the Historical Museum. Open structures vary daily.

Also on May 25, the English Country Dance program returns to the village with a public open house. The public are encouraged to attend to learn more about the social dances popular in England in the 17th-19th centuries. English Country Dance classes are held twice a month throughout the year.
