Volunteer Spotlight: Julia Murray

To continue our celebration of Volunteer Appreciation Month, meet Visitor Services Volunteer, Julia Murray who you can see every Saturday greeting visitors in our Historical Museum.

Why did you decide to become a volunteer at HRT?
After working at HRT through the Summer Youth Employment Program this past summer, I discovered how much I enjoy history and learning how Staten Island developed into the wonderful borough it is today. I love sharing that knowledge with others.

How much time do you put into volunteering?
I volunteer as often as I can, but at least once a week, on Saturdays.

What kind of volunteer work do you do here?
I will do anything I’m asked to do, but generally, I work at the Museum. I was recently asked to train to become a Docent, which I have. It was a great honor to be taught by the knowledgeable staff here at HRT.

What has been your favorite moment as a volunteer?
My favorite moments are when I get to meet the various people who come to explore the Museum. I also love to learn about the backstories of the different historic buildings. I always learn something new!

How has volunteering connected you with the community?
I really enjoy educating guests on what Historic Richmondtown is and was. I also learned just how much Staten Island has to offer our residents!

What kind of people would you recommend to volunteer at HRT?
I would recommend anyone who enjoys history and has a sense of community.

How has volunteering helped you professionally in any way?
Volunteering has helped me gain confidence speaking in front of large groups.

What are you most looking forward to this year as a volunteer at HRT?
I am most looking forward to making new friends!

How has volunteering changed you or your outlook on life?
Volunteering at HRT has given me insight into how important non-profit organizations are to society. It takes a whole lot of special people to help them thrive and stay connected to the community.
