Over the past 500 years, courageous and enterprising people have shaped the culture of New York City and Staten Island. This talk will explore highlights of our rich and diverse history, landscape and peoples, from the Lenape nations to the ethnic mosaic of today.
Join scholars Lori R. Weintrob and Heather M. Butts (pictured above), authors of Discovering Staten Island: Treasures and Untold Stories, for a discussion of notable Staten Islanders through time, including Cornelius Vanderbilt, Robert Gould Shaw, Moses K. Harris, Llyod Ikefugi, Greta Moulton and Audre Lorde, among others.
In addition, the lives of history’s lesser known heroes will come to light; including immigrants whose enterprise and artistry have enriched the borough. Learn about the Hungarian artisans on SI manufactured ornaments that adorn Manhattan skyscrapers; German-Jewish philanthropist Berta Dreyfus who helped fund Richmond Memorial Hospital, later SI University Hospital; Greek, Italian and African-American farmers and the oystermen of Sandy Ground fed our city.
This program highlights the shared and diverse past of Staten Island, and illuminates the Borough’s often overlooked social history.
