Join us for an exploration of Staten Island history and memory with author and historian Janet Necker Medoro. Growing up on Staten Island, Janet and her brother Jack were always interested in the history of their neighborhood and borough. Over the course of their lives, their shared passion for history grew, leading to countless hours of walking the island’s streets, trails, beaches and public lands. The story of Staten Island unfolds alongside a personal history - resulting in a book, Our Staten Island.
In this lecture, Ms. Medoro will discuss the history of the settlement of New Dorp (from the Dutch Nieuw Dorp, or ‘New Village’) , from its origins as a Dutch and English colonial settlement. Medoro synthesizes years of research in archives and libraries, including the Historic Richmond Town collection, to present a narrative of a neighborhood in a new light.
